Lyon is packed full of history. During the time of the Roman Empire, Lyon was called Lugdunum and even served as the capital of Gaul. The city has always been a hive of activity and over the ages has grown considerably. It boasts a strong tradition of trade and a fascinating industrial heritage. It was in Lyon, for instance, that the first steam-powered boats, hot air balloons and sewing machines were developed. The city is now home to almost 500,000 inhabitants, or over two million people if you include its suburbs.

What's worth seeing in Lyon?
Lyon is an attractive city in many different ways. Being an ancient city, it's home to a wide variety of architectural traditions. The Place Bellecour is one of the largest squares in France and the biggest entirely-pedestrianized public square in Europe. Lyon Opera house, the Hôtel de ville (city hall), the Fontaine Bartholdi fountain and the Temple du Change are all stunning architectural gems in their own right. To make getting around easy and to see a maximum number of sights you can hire a car through Air France.
Lyon is ideally situated, an hour's drive from the nearest winter sports resorts in the Alps and three hours from the Mediterranean. Discover one of France's biggest urban parks with a stroll through the Parc de la Tête d'Or. This park features a number of botanical gardens, a lake with an island and even a zoo that's of considerable historical interest, having been created back in 1858. The hills of La Fourvière and La Croix-Rousse also represent pleasant oases of greenery in the heart of the city.
Lyon occupies an important place in French culture, as it is considered to be the country's culinary capital. If you wander through the narrow streets of Vieux-Lyon you'll see numerous quirky restaurants called “bouchons”. Whether you're interested in the Old Masters or contemporary art, the history of the city, or the story of a particular period in time (Gallo-Roman museum, African museum), there are lots of attractions and places showcasing the best of what Lyon - past and present - has to offer. Each year in December, the city's landmarks and main buildings are bathed in colour during the Fête des Lumières (the Festival of Lights). Lyon is also the birthplace of the motion picture, invented by the Lumière brothers. You can also benefit from special rates on excursions and tours when you buy your airplane ticket with Air France.
